With all the focus on the bruising battle between ex-house Speaker Newt Gingrich and the front-runner, Mitt Romney, very little attention is being paid to the only other contender to have won a state. That’s the former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. Unfortunately his victory in Iowa was hardly noticed because on the night itself it was Romney who was ahead by eight votes. The process of certifying the result shifted the total so that two and a half weeks later Santorum was officially declared the winner by a margin of 34 but by that time the narrative had moved on. In much of the polling, both nationally and in individual states, Santorum scores well on the “favourability” ratings. He is the least disliked of the four men still in the race by potential Republican primary voters. His challenge is to convert the positive views into votes in primary elections.
