The civil war has devastated much of Syria in recent years, two and a half years, but a part of the country – the Kurdish region in the north-east – was relatively unscathed. Last month, however, a flood of nearly 200,000 refugees in the Syrian Kurds largely autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq has raised new fears that the Kurds of Syria are becoming more involved in the most violent conflict in the Middle East. Refugees fleeing from attacks by jihadist groups that have attacked Kurdish communities along the border with Turkey.
