UN calls on Iraqi authorities to ban the death penalty

"Ensure that all allegations of torture or ill-treatment carefully, thoroughly and independently investigated and perpetrators prosecuted and convicted under the law, and that all victims properly and adequately received compensation, including relevant medical, social and other support" – says one of the recommendations of the UN report. Urging the Government of Iraq to declare a moratorium on executions, the report called for the observance of international standards by the Iraqi authorities to ensure protection of those sentenced to death until the moment when the death penalty be abolished. According to data cited in the report, Iraq executed 257 people since 2005. While in 2010, subject to execution 18 is less than in previous years. The death penalty in Iraq now expect 835 people. Turning to the regional government of Kurdistan, the UN mission in Iraq has demanded the release of all those sentenced to long terms of imprisonment, detention without charges, or to ensure that they were tried according to international standards. According to the report, the number of Iraqi civilians killed in violence in 2010 has reached 2953 people, 14 398 more were injured and maimed. However, the Ministry of Human Rights in Iraq brings this data to the 3254 dead and 13,788 wounded. According to Western experts, in the last year have died from violence 4063 civilians. In particular, the experts of the UN mission in Iraq celebrate 209 attempts targeted assassinations of those or other persons, including 92 cases of assassination of Iraqi security personnel, 88 – against officials of Iraq and 29 – against civilians. Results from the hands of assassins killed 71 people. "Civil servants, community leaders and religious figures, journalists, health workers and professionals in the field of education were the main objectives. Baghdad and the northern region (particularly Mosul) were the most susceptible to violence, killing people and causing them harm "- the report says.
