There’s a good possibility that the Patom Crater is the surface expression of a Kimberlite Pipe. The hot CO2 driving the formation of these diapirs usually creates a great amount of dolomite, and lesser calcite. which fill fractures and cavities. As the intrained mafics have been effectively boiled in liquid CO2, much of the silicate matrix of these pipes has typically undergone carbonate metasomatism.

If the structure is as recently formed (300-350 years) as indicated by the dendrochronology, this might be an excellent opportunity to study a Kimberlite Pipe in the process of formation.
